I’ve been doing a lot of research on data recently, particularly on how it’s collected, stored , processed and deleted as well as the laws regulating it. I’ve discovered a lot and I’ve been actively talking about it and advising my friends and family to be careful about how they disseminate their data, because everything is being stored and monitored and there are little or no regulations guiding use, especially in this part of the world. Although in recent times, some laws and regulations are cropping up, for instance, GDPR for Europe and NDPR in Nigeria that helps regulate how data should be collected, used, processed and stored where necessary.
So I’ve been preaching the gospel of ‘please be careful not to put so much about you online and offline, since they are now using it to control us for targeted ads. My mom was at my house last week and I think she ran into one invoice that was on the floor or somewhere sha and she asks if I still need it. I said no o, I don’t, that she should throw it away. My sister collected it and was about to throw it away when she said “ Ahan, gbo gbo information e ma lo wa Lori e”( all your info is in it).
Ladies and gentlemen, that invoice carried my name, address, phone number and house address, everything needed to identify me. We ended up tearing it into tiny unidentifiable pieces.
Me, Titilola the data warrior! Mo fuck up. Lol.
Anyways, always ensure you properly dispose any document that can identify you by burning or tearing where it’s paper and when signing up on websites, ensure you read privacy policies to see how your data will be used and if you have the option to manage use.
How have you been protecting your data?
